Hazard signs

What is a hazard?
Worksafe New Zealand defines a hazard as "An activity, arrangement, circumstance, event, occurrence, phenomenon, process, situation or substance that is an actual or potential cause or source of harm"

Mandatory signs

Mandatory signs are usually a blue circle with a white icon. and tells us what we need to to do to insure our safety. They can tell us to do a variety of things such as we must wear gloves, hard hats, recycle, etc.

Prohibitive signs
Prohibitive signs are often a red circle with a diagonal line through the middle going over a black icon. These signs are here to tell us what we're not allowed to do at all. You usually see these around public areas saying things such as no smoking, littering, dogs, etc.

Hazard signs

Hazard signs are usually bright yellow with a black icon. They're used to warn you of a potential hazard that could cause harm or possibly kill you. Things such as something catching fire, nuclear radiation, electrocution, etc.

My amazingly designed sign

We also had to create a sign that can tackle an issue in the workplace. I decided to  create a sign to warn people there is hot metal nearby. Mr Rees told us that sometimes, after heating metal, you can't tell either which end was heated or that it was heated at all. You can't tell exactly what is happening so it's not great.

Below is an example of work hazards that we are able to somewhat avoid

Do YOU want to make a good jingle???

What am I learning?
 - In music I'm learning about what makes a good jingle. We had to make a list of things that make a good jingle, below is my list

How does this show my learning?
- This shows my learning as it's proof that I've done research about jingles and have put in the effort to create an attractive graphic

We also had to watch 4 adverts that involved jingles and rate them using our list.

1. The kiwi-burger - 10/10

The kiwi burger is a classic NZ burger which is always advertised with the classic kiwi-burger jingle. It involves classic NZ things such as rugby, sheep, buzzy bee, etc. It appeals to viewers and tells you how it's made with classic NZ companies.

2. Bluebird's chips - 10/10

The upbeat and almost wacky music suits the wackiness of the video. The repetitiveness of their slogan makes it hard to forget and the jingle itself is upbeat and shows that you'll get excited while eating these chips. I think it checks everything on my list.

3. Bunnings warehouse - 8.5/10

They keep the slogan and tune the same throughout all their commercials which means you'll remember it better. It also tells you about the prices and how there better than any other place and that there's more than that. It doesn't really tick off everything but it is a shorter jingle and is usually used as an instrumental in the background.

4. Watties Sauce - 9/10

I think being told that you're not a kiwi unless you use there sauce makes you want to buy the sauce to be considered one. The use a slogan type thing and the brand name which is good and the tune is something cheery to listen to.

What am I wondering?
- The actual process itself, things such as deciding to do a jingle, words to include, tune, etc. I also wonder how long it takes to finalise the jingle and release it to the public.

Art assessment I think

What have I learned about compostion?
 - I learnt how to make things not look so flat and how to make something stand out. I also learnt about enlarging and decreasing the size of painting/carving to fit the wood/canvas

Print making/Carving
What have I learn about carving/print making?
 - I learned that you need to keep your design simple, otherwise it'll take quite a while and you may mess up. You also must be very patient and not rush, by rushing you have more of a chance of messing it up.

What do I think of my carving skills?
 - I think I did a pretty good job. Although there were some uneven parts it still came out good.

What do I think of my final print?
 - I'm quite proud of myself actually. I believe it came out really well for my first carving/print.

Painting

What have I learned about painting?
 - I learnt mainly about how to do make something not look too flat, such as trees, flowers, ect. I did painting before this so there wasn't too much I learnt but I did learnt that I enjoy doing simple paintings and that I really enjoy painting landscape type things.

What do I think of my painting skills?
 - I think I've improved quite a bit. Before I didn't really put into much effort with the color but my color mixing skills have gotten waaaaaay better now.

What do I thinks of my final painting?
 - I really like how the cherry blossom tree came out and I think the kimono is ok but I don't like the face. I think that the eyes and mouth don't quite fit in with the rest of the painting, other than that I like how it came out. I do think that I could've made it a bit more expressive though.

This isn't all the art I've done over the term but it is most of the art I've done at school I did more at home so...

Look at all those assessments - Drama

What I have learned about performance skills is that it's important to not just use words but also your body language to express emotion.

What evidence do I have of my performance skills improving?
- I was much more willing  and confident in my performing skills, before this I was not.

What do you know about performing arts jobs?
- I know that there is a wide range of jobs in the performing arts, from carpenters to performing, lighting to costume design, etc.

What I am wondering about performing arts is
- Whether I would like to do it in the future and how hard it would be to get into the bussiness

Performing art programs/venues in Christchurch

1. Court Theatre
     - The Court Theatre mainly perform more local shows or shows that you shouldn't take too seriously. They are most widely known for being the home of the Court Jesters, a comedy group, who put on comedy shows and scared scriptless, a late night improv comedy show every Friday & Saturday. Their website doesn't specify what it takes to join but I'm guessing you would have to get in contact with them.

2. Imagine Youth Theatre
    - They do productions sutiable for kids (think cinderella, alice in wonderland) and also offer the oppurtunity for kids and teens to get involved in the performing arts. At the moment there is writer/artistic director Martin Howells, set designer Chris Reddington, lighting design and operator Stephen Brinkhurst, and project director Helen Moran. To start performing with them you'll have to audition usually with a speech, song, or any type of performance. For joining crew you'll most likely need some sort of experince.

3. Showbiz
   - Showbiz usually brings the musicals of broadway to NZ and are usually professionally done. They've done shows such as Mamma Mia!, Hairspray, Evita, and most recently, Wicked. I'm unable to find a set cast and crew so I believe they change it from production to production. Because these are pretty serious productions you'll need to be able to sing, dance, perform, and, depending on the role, have killer vocals. You also need to audition (obviously).

4. Isaac Theatre Royal
    - Isaace Theatre Royal hosts a range of performances, from concerts and musicals to local schools that are participating in dancing like the stars. The cast change from show to show and, again, is not set. I'm unsure about the crew but I'm assuming you would just need to keep a look out for ads from them. You can though join their front/back of house (ushers, tending bar, etc) and you'll need to be reliable and energetic. Experince does also help.
